Measuring Existing Conditions from Photos and Point Clouds

HomeBlogMeasuring Existing Conditions from Photos and Point Clouds

A return site visit for one missing dimension can slow a project. Visual documentation can answer many of those questions when the source is appropriate and the expected accuracy is understood.

Calibrated photo measurement

OcuMap supports measurement from flat photos without requiring a point cloud. A user calibrates the image using a known dimension, then measures lengths and areas within the photograph. This is useful for many remote review tasks where the image has suitable perspective and a reliable calibration reference.

Point-cloud measurement

LAS, LAZ and E57 point clouds can be viewed and measured natively in OcuMap. Point clouds provide 3D geometry and are often the better source when the project requires dimensional review across many objects or surfaces.

Use measurement for the right questions

  • Approximate or project-review dimensions
  • Existing-condition verification
  • Remote coordination
  • Area checks
  • Planning a follow-up site visit more efficiently

Do not confuse convenience with source accuracy

OcuMap does not make the source more accurate than it was when captured. A calibrated photo, point cloud, laser scan or survey should be used according to its own accuracy, quality-control process and project requirements. Legal, survey or fabrication-critical dimensions may require authoritative field verification.

Keep measurements with the documentation

The value of measuring inside the visual record is context. Users can see the source used for the measurement instead of receiving a detached number with no visual explanation.

Pair measurement with historical records

When documentation is repeated, comparison and measurement together can help teams understand how visible conditions changed over time.

Practical checklist

  • Start with the business or project question, not the tool.
  • Identify which source is authoritative for location and dimensions.
  • Keep capture date and spatial context with the record.
  • Use measurement only within the accuracy limits of the source.
  • Preserve originals for future reuse.
  • Connect each resource to the relevant OcuMap project, solution or Platform page.

Common questions

Can I measure from a normal photo?

Yes, when the photo can be calibrated using a reliable known dimension. Length and area measurement are supported.

Are photo measurements survey grade?

Not inherently. Accuracy depends on calibration, perspective, image quality and the reference dimension.

Can I measure LAS, LAZ and E57 point clouds?

Yes. Native point-cloud measurement is supported.
